From Survival Mode to Growth Mode: A Wake-Up Call for the Deaf Community

Let’s be real for a moment.

After years of facing barriers — communication gaps, lack of access, being underestimated or overlooked — many Deaf individuals (myself included) have learned to just “deal with it” and move on. No time to process. No room to feel. Just survive.

But survival mode isn’t meant to last forever.

The Loop We Don’t Talk About Enough

Over time, survival becomes a mindset. A loop. One that quietly shapes how we see the world and what we believe is possible for ourselves.

It might sound like:

  • “It’s always harder for us.”
  • “Nothing ever changes.”
  • “Why even try?”

The dangerous part?

You can still look strong on the outside — showing up for work, parenting, even achieving success — but deep down, feel stuck, tired, and unseen.

This mindset can feel like protection. But it can also become your ceiling.

If you’re curious to explore this deeper, here’s a post about mindset and how it might be showing up in your life.

A Hard Question That Changed Everything

Here’s the question that woke me up:

What if my current mindset is what’s holding me back — more than the system, the job, or the people around me?

That’s not an easy question. It requires honesty. It requires vulnerability. But it also opens the door to something powerful:

Growth.

If you’re ready to explore how to take action and shift that mindset into momentum, here’s a resource that walks you through the first steps.

What Growth Mindset Really Means

Let’s clear something up — growth mindset isn’t about pretending everything’s fine or ignoring the real challenges we face as Deaf individuals.

It’s about believing you have the power to learn, adapt, and move forward — even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.

It’s about saying:

  • “I can learn new skills.”
  • “I can change my situation.”
  • “I don’t have to stay stuck just because I’ve been stuck.”

Here’s a link where I explain more about the difference between fixed and growth mindset and how it directly impacts our daily lives.

How I Started to Shift

This didn’t happen overnight. But here’s what helped me:

  • I got around people who challenged how I think

Growth doesn’t happen in isolation.

  • I stopped explaining myself to people who weren’t willing to understand

Protect your energy.

  • I took small steps toward something new

Momentum is more powerful than motivation.

If you’re ready to start taking small steps too, I made this guide to help you take action without feeling overwhelmed.

If You’re in the In-Between…

You’re not stuck. You’re just between chapters.

If you’re a Deaf parent, a professional, or someone who knows deep down that there’s more for you — more time, more freedom, more impact — this is your reminder that you’re not alone and that something better is possible.

You don’t have to leap. You just have to shift.
