Hi, I’m Jordan. I’m a Deaf dad and husband based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
I look for ways to promote accessibility and inclusion with the Deaf community.
The Foundation
One of the foundations when changing Deaf lives is to have an accessible and inclusive environment. One example is my family has a Bilingual-Bicultural (or Bi-Bi) home. This means, at a minimum, we communicate using spoken, written, and signed languages at home.
There are benefits to having a Bi-Bi approach at home with the family. One of them is enhancing the well-being and quality of Deaf lives. In my case as a Deaf dad, the well-being and quality of lives for my Deaf kids.
Why This Matters
Growing up, I met countless barriers on all levels related to communication, attitudinal and systemic barriers. These barriers are not new to us but are often overlooked by those who have not experienced these kinds of barriers.
Some examples of barriers:
- Videos without captions or subtitles
- Documents without sign language translations
- Conversations without sign language interpreters
- Assumptions what Deaf people can or cannot do
These are just a few to mention and is only the tip of the iceberg.
Unfortunately, I’m already seeing history repeating itself with my Deaf kids.
It is time to be proactive and to change the narrative.
How? You may ask.

The Big Idea
Here is a big idea I was inspired by:
E = mc2
- E is empowerment.
- m is motivation to change.
- c is conversations.
- c is to come up with creative solutions.
Putting these together,
Empowerment stems from being motivated to change and having conversations with people to come up with creative solutions contributing to an accessible, inclusive and equitable environment.
